01 / THE CONTEXT

First, the context.

THE VOTEME TAKE

Changing who performs the voice is real progress. It does not magically rewrite the character.

Apu spoke again on The Simpsons in the October 18 episode ‘Treehouse of Horror Presents: The Revengening,’ after eight years without a speaking role. Indian-born American actor Sunil Malhotra now voices Apu, and Indian American actor Janina Gavankar voices Manjula. Malhotra said the audition initially made his stomach sink and that he was prepared to walk away unless the producers would address past mistakes and let him collaborate on the character. He later described the return as a reclamation; Gavankar called Malhotra the right person to bring Apu home. The history remains part of the story. Hari Kondabolu’s 2017 documentary, The Problem With Apu, examined how a white actor’s performance of one of American television’s few regular South Asian characters helped turn Apu into a stereotype and a schoolyard insult. Hank Azaria stopped voicing Apu and later apologized for his participation. Kondabolu told the Associated Press that he had never asked for Apu to be canceled and called the new casting a clever solution. Executive producer Matt Selman says the show wants the character to evolve. That promise can be judged only by what future episodes actually do.

02 / THE POINTS OF VIEW

Receipts before regrets

The recasting is a real correction—not empty corporate wallpaper.

WHAT THE SOURCES SAY

  • Malhotra and Gavankar are the new voices of Apu and Manjula, and Malhotra says he conditioned his participation on a thoughtful, collaborative process.
  • Kondabolu, whose documentary drove the public debate, praised the solution and reiterated that he never demanded the character disappear.

OUR READING · INTERPRETATION

A character does not have to be buried forever because an earlier portrayal caused harm. Giving South Asian performers creative agency can reclaim Apu from being somebody else’s accent and let the family become more than the controversy around them.

Clip versus context

A new actor does not automatically make an old stereotype new.

WHAT THE SOURCES SAY

  • Apu’s history includes an exaggerated accent, convenience-store shorthand and years in which many South Asian viewers had little competing representation on American television.
  • Selman says the character will evolve, but one Halloween episode cannot establish how future stories will handle his work, family, immigrant identity or comic function.

OUR READING · INTERPRETATION

Authentic casting matters, but identity is not a magic eraser. If Apu returns only to perform the same narrow jokes with a different name in the credits, that is personnel change—not character growth. The fair test is the writing that comes next.

WHAT THE RECEIPTS CANNOT SETTLE

The Associated Press interviewed Kondabolu and other South Asian observers and quoted statements from Malhotra, Gavankar and executive producer Matt Selman. People and The Guardian provide additional context on Malhotra’s hesitation, collaboration and the actors’ joint statement. VoteMe does not claim South Asian viewers agree on Apu, that a single recasting resolves the stereotype debate or that the new actors control future scripts. ‘Old baggage still speaks,’ ‘corporate wallpaper’ and the conclusions in both readings are labeled VoteMe interpretation. The photographs show Gavankar at a September 2026 event in Utah and Kondabolu performing in Brooklyn in December 2017; neither depicts the episode, recording sessions or the actors’ joint post.

HAWKE’S EYE · OPINION

Springfield found Apu a voice after eight years and a crisis-management plan after roughly forever. That is our joke. The serious version: representation is not a casting checkbox. It is who gets to perform the character, who gets heard in the room and what the writers make him do once the applause ends.
