01 / THE CONTEXT

First, the context.

THE VOTEME TAKE

Intent matters. So does the obvious implication of borrowing a famous televised slap to answer a judge’s criticism.

After Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba criticized a lift in Jenna Johnson and Harry Shum Jr.’s October 14 routine, Johnson’s husband and fellow pro Val Chmerkovskiy posted, ‘You almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom last night.’ Entertainment Weekly reported the deleted Instagram Story as a reference to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. Chmerkovskiy later said he made a poor decision by using a meme to say ‘keep my wife’s name’ out of it, did not think through the implication and had not intended harm. He apologized publicly and said he apologized to Inaba personally. Johnson separately said Inaba was doing her job. On October 17, BBC Studios said the post was inappropriate and that Chmerkovskiy would not participate in the following week’s show. Dancing With the Stars confirmed that Alan Bersten will partner Jenna Dewan for Tuesday’s Dedication Night. The suspension is real; a claim that Chmerkovskiy intended or planned violence is not supported by the cited record.

02 / THE POINTS OF VIEW

The crowd can cope

A one-week benching is a consequence, not a cancellation.

WHAT THE SOURCES SAY

  • BBC Studios called the post inappropriate and said Chmerkovskiy will not participate in the next episode.
  • The borrowed reference points to a real, televised act of violence even if Chmerkovskiy says he meant it as a meme.

OUR READING · INTERPRETATION

A workplace can treat the foreseeable implication as serious without declaring its author permanently dangerous. One missed episode draws a clear line and leaves room for the apology and future conduct to matter. That is accountability with an expiration date, not exile.

Strongest dissent

He apologized before the suspension. Do not turn one bad post into a permanent identity.

WHAT THE SOURCES SAY

  • Chmerkovskiy said he made a poor decision, did not intend harm and apologized both publicly and personally.
  • Johnson said Inaba was doing her job; no cited source says Chmerkovskiy threatened or attempted physical violence.

OUR READING · INTERPRETATION

A temporary sanction can be defensible and still become overkill if the internet treats it as proof of a violent character. The useful test is whether he owns the implication and changes the behavior—not whether strangers can keep the scandal touring longer than the show.

WHAT THE RECEIPTS CANNOT SETTLE

VoteMe reviewed BBC Studios’ statement as quoted by ABC7 and Entertainment Weekly, Chmerkovskiy’s apology as reported from his Instagram Story, Johnson’s follow-up comments and ABC’s official program pages. The deleted original post was not independently captured by VoteMe. ‘Slap meme’ and ‘accountability, not exile’ are VoteMe shorthand and opinion. This story does not claim Chmerkovskiy intended violence, threatened Inaba or would have acted. It does not invent backstage reactions. The photograph is a licensed May 2008 context portrait of Inaba, not October 2026 ballroom or suspension photography.

HAWKE’S EYE · OPINION

The ballroom already has enough lifts; it did not need a borrowed slap. That is our joke. The less funny point is simple: if the reference only works because everybody remembers the violence, ‘I meant it as a meme’ does not erase the implication. An apology should count. So should one proportionate consequence.
